In a comprehensive study by Abend et al. (2025), researchers utilized electronic health records from six major US medical systems to estimate the prevalence of autoimmune diseases. They developed a software program to analyze data from January 1, 2011, to June 1, 2022, and found that approximately 4.6% of the US population, over 15 million people, have been diagnosed with at least one autoimmune disease. Notably, 34% of these individuals have more than one autoimmune disease.

The study also revealed a gender disparity, with females making up 63% of those diagnosed, nearly double the rate of males. The research identified the top 20 autoimmune diseases by prevalence, offering insights into how these conditions are distributed across different sexes and age groups. This large-scale estimation provides a valuable resource for understanding the impact of autoimmune diseases in the US.
